Yes, We Can!!

Soooooooo... I saw Barack Obama today. Stood in the same room... breathed the same air.. and yes I was in awe!

The doors to the arena opened at 4:30p so since I live a mere 6 minutes away... we (my friend and I) agreed to leave home at 3:45p. Wrong move! By the time we got in front of the arena in bumper to bumper traffic it was 4:30p and the parking lot was full. Thank God it was right across the street from the mall. So we parked over at the mall and walked over. Not a little walk, but couldn't complain as it was 60+ degree weather and not a cloud in sight. Great day for a walk.

So we get to the front of the building and we see a long line, wrapped around and around and around. We walk around and around and around to find the end of the line, only to be told that we're in the wrong line, we need to be in the General Admission line. So we mosey on over to the General Admission area, where there is a massive crowd gathered, not really in a line, but more in a gathering. We're told that we need to be at the end of the gathering.

So we walk and walk.. and then my friend ends up being in some bushy area. I asked him what he was doing there, he said to take a short cut to the end of the line... when we look down, we're on a sort of mound and about 500 yards away is the end of the gathering. Plan B!

We stood where we were and saw that they were forming a line right in front of us, so people were bottle-necking their way into a line. So what do the two Yardies do...join in. After another 30 minutes or so of shuffling... we're firmly in the line and can even see the building we're supposed to be entering. Shuffle, Shuffle, Shuffle! Then we're going through security. Good thing I read the information on the rally... no bags. So I stuffed my camera, cell phone, extra battery, Ambesol (been battling a toothache) mints and small amount of cash in all my pockets. All clear.

We get inside and walk around and finally decide on a spot, then as luck would have it...my friend would happen to be sitting next to his least favorite person in the entire world. I mean we didn't see anyone else we knew and yet we were right beside this guy. For a peaceful life... RELOCATE!! So we moved further away from the podium.

Two local politicians gave opening speeches.. not too long at all. Then Joe Biden came on and spoke for a while... and introduced the man of the hour. You could feel the electricity in the room. People were screaming and crying openly. Tears came to my eyes. Then he spoke. Magic!! Pure Magic!!

Independent?

>> Wednesday, October 22, 2008

What is your definition of an independent woman? To me, an independent woman is one who can manage to take care of herself without the help from others. She can manage her own bills, shopping, etc. without the help of someone else. Usually that someone else, in our society, is a man.

So when I am watching a reality show and this lady introduces herself to the audience as someone who is separated from an athlete and is hoping to win a seven figure settlement from him, forgive me but independent does not come to mind. To me, she depends on him still even though they are separated to maintain her lifestyle. I wonder what is her definition of independent.

The context was based on finances, however, if this is the case then she still relies on income from him. So how is she independent? It annoys me to hear these women label themselves as being independent when they are everything BUT that. In watching this same reality show I have seen them spend money as if there is no tomorrow…tithing $15,000 (this one annoys me but for different reasons…she chews her words) … buying a brand new SUV with a personal check…dropping loads of cash on designer labels…but I guess that's just another day in the life of these housewives.

Menu Planning.

>> Tuesday, October 21, 2008

One of the many tough decisions I face on a daily basis is what to eat for dinner. I know it sounds trivial.. but it's not.

What usually happens is that I will think about what to cook and not think up anything new and exciting and so at the very last minute... when the bile begins to rise in my throat.. I'll run out and get some crappy fast food. Not crappy.. in that it tastes crappy.. but crappy in that more than likely it was deep fried in lard and soooooooo not good for you.

So I've been attempting to make a weekly menu plan. I like to cook, but have been tired of the usual fares in my home. Been trying to experiment, but can't go too far off the deep end. The husband only truly likes rice and chicken... and yes in that order. Boooorrrrriiinnngggg!! He tries to appease me by giving in every now and then... the other day he did try my sweet potato fries (or bakes.. as they were baked)... but of course we had to make a small pot of white rice for him as usual. If he eats lasagna for dinner, he wants rice with it.. so that's a drag.

Anyhow, meal planning is very time consuming... but worth it, in that I don't have to wonder what to make.. because it's already been planned!

I don't get it.

Seriously!

Bill Ayers and Barack Obama had a link when Mr. Obama was 8.

Yet while 9-11 was going on President Bush and Osama Bin Laden's family had a relationship.. not a link... a relationship... and it was okay.

Music

>> Friday, October 17, 2008

Music has been a friend of mine for so many years. These days it seems as if it's a long lost friend. I remember those Saturdays that I turned on my fave radio station, or listened to my favorite cd or cassette (yes I said cassette) and cleaned and folded laundry. Listened to music while getting dressed, while cooking... and yet in these days of ipods and mp3's I don't listen to music anymore. Yes I have lots of music, but I don't really sit and listen like I used to. Even in the car these days I tend to listen to the radio to hear news or whats the latest conversation going on.

Strangely enough, I was reminded by tv to listen to music. They were talking about the effect that the economy was having on people. People are getting more and more depressed. So one of the ways to try and clear the fog is to listen to music. Along with watching movies and exercising.

So I'm currently listening to Jennifer Hudson's latest album. BTW... speaking of Jennifer Hudson... I know she seems happy and all.. but seriously... PUNK from I Love NY is her fiance... is she serious?

Letters

>> Monday, October 13, 2008

I must be going through a change in my life or something. Within the last three weeks, I have let go totally of a friend. Well to me, she was never my friend. So no big loss on my part. I was just tired of her using me and thinking that it was okay. It's not! I was always polite and saying "Noooo, it's no problem... sure I'll do it" Then it all got very tiring. So now, I'm free.

But also, I had a heartfelt communication with someone I thought or think that I'd lost. I have not heard back from her, but it felt so freeing to get it off my chest. I didn't even realize that I felt the way I did until I tried to put it into words.

But there are more to write. To right. To get it off my chest. To try to understand. So soon enough, I'll have a better understanding of it all. I hope.

Anti-Obama? Say it ain't so!

I actually know someone who is Anti-Obama.

I was surprised. Well I don't KNOW him like that. We have mutual friends and we went to the same school at one point. I was surprised and at the same time.. I wasn't. The surprising part was that he said he thought that people were backing him because he was Black. What? Are you kidding me? In this country, that's his downfall, if you ask me. Yes I understand they are people out there backing a brotha, but for the most part I'd like to think that people support him because of what he stands for.

This apparently is where the problem lies for my friend. He says that Obama supports gays and abortion.. and that's a big no no. Well by traditional Jamaican standards, I guess he does have a point. However, there are many things that are contradictory in Jamaica...Men don't bow. Meaning they don't have oral sex. However, the majority of women in Jamaica won't sleep with a man unless there is oral sex.. so there is some bowing going on somewhere. Then there is the thing that no-one eats pork... but at any given party... the first meat that they run out of is pork. Just as how "batty bwoy fi dead" ... yet there is a strong homosexual society in Jamaica. So bottom line is.. I don't buy that shit. Support the man because he wants to create change. He has a plan. Direction! He's in touch with what's going on today. More than what's his name. The way things are now, WE NEED CHANGE. It's not a want anymore.
